SAVING “THE MOUNTAIN”
With the highest point on Guemes Island under threat, citizens and conservation groups are coming together to save an island treasure.
The summit of what locals refer to as “The Mountain” is a privately owned and undeveloped property that has rewarded generations of families with wildflower blooms, peaceful walks and unobstructed panoramic views of Mt. Baker, the port of Anacortes, Samish and Lummi islands and the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. The layered vistas of the surrounding San Juan Islands and the rural landscape of Guemes Island, including hundreds of adjoining acres of conserved land, contribute to the uniqueness of this property. As real estate values soar in the islands, and as countless signature island properties are lost to development, “The Mountain” on Guemes has remained safe… UNTIL NOW.
